Hello all and welcome back to another Hyp3rblue’s Top Lists. Last month I spoke about some SNES games I used to own and how a few that I’m looking to add back to my collection have really gone up in price.
I was both a SNES and a Sega Genesis (or Mega Drive) kid. Luckily for me, I never sold my Genesis games. It’s probably because Genesis games weren’t going for high prices… at least not the ones I owned. I took a look at the prices of some of the games in my collection and I was surprised how much some of these games are going for now. That being said, here are 14 Sega Genesis games I own that have increased in price.
I’m basing all of these prices on 2 factors: the current price from PriceCharting.com and what’s currently listed on eBay. There are some price discrepancies between the 2 so I will provide a range for each entry.
#14: Boogerman: A Pick and Flick Adventure – $21
Ah the 90s, a time when gross-out humor was so big that even video game companies got into the craze. I’m sure there are plenty of gross-out games out there but the one that clearly stands out to me is Boogerman, with his trademarked catch phrase, “BOOGER!”
Boogerman would flick boogers at his enemies, burp and fart. It’s a simple 2D platformer with its quirks, but it’s playable and pretty funny if you’re into bad puns and farting. This game is currently trending at $21 for a loose cartridge and $45-$55 for a complete copy.
This is actually surprising to me since I figure it was widely produced, but I guess with game collecting being so prevalent that maybe the copies are drying up? Either way, keep an eye out for our flatulent friend.
#13: Sonic the Hedgehog 3 – $21
This is another surprising one to me. I would have guessed there were a ton of copies of Sonic the Hedgehog games floating around out there but, like I said before, maybe people are just stockpiling them. Who knows?
In any case, this is a fan favorite to be sure and it really pushed the limits of the Sega Genesis. So much so that it couldn’t be contained in one cartridge (but more on that in a bit). If you want a copy of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 then you’ll need to pay up to $21 for a loose cartridge and $45 – $48 for a complete copy. It’s one of the best games for the system so, if you haven’t played it, do yourself a favor and grab a copy.
#12: Sonic and Knuckles – $23
Since Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is increasing in then it makes sense that Sonic and Knuckles is climbing up there too.
Sonic and Knuckles is an expansion of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and also contains the remainder of the game. If you play the game by itself, you can start playing from the end of Level 6 from Sonic the Hedgehog 3. However, if you put the two together and you can play the entire game.
In addition, the add-on allowed players to play as Knuckles the Echidna and also introduced new powers (Sonic and Knuckles hyper forms as well as Super Tails). You’ll definitely want a copy of this to go along with your Sonic the Hedgehog 3 cartridge. Plus you can use the Sonic and Knuckles cartridge to play as Knuckles in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. In that case, you’re looking at $23-$27 for a loose cartridge and $45 and $57 for a boxed copy.
#11: Streets of Rage – $25
The Streets of Rage series is a classic side-scrolling beat ‘em up series that is loved by many. I spent many hours playing this game and its sequels with my friends and family. It’s a solid game that still holds up today.
There are 2 different versions of Streets of Rage, the original version and the Sega Classic version. While the two versions have different box art, I don’t believe I don’t think the cartridge artwork is different. That being said, if you’re looking to grab a copy of Streets of Rage you’ll pay $25 – $35 for a loose copy and $45 – $75 for a complete copy.
#10: Streets of Rage 2 – $30
Not much more to say about Street of Rage 2 that I didn’t already mention about the first one. This sequel introduced new characters, new enemies, and new attacks. To add this to your collection you will need to pay $30 for a loose cartridge or $60 for a complete copy.
I’m actually surprised that Streets of Rage 1 and 2 are climbing up in price. They’ve always been on the low side, as opposed to Streets of Rage 3 which has always been a bit high. I guess they’re just finally catching up.
#9: McDonald’s Treasure Land Adventure – $42
Back in the day, restaurant and brand mascots got their own games and most of them were pretty decent. McDonald’s Treasure Land Adventure was one of the better mascot games in my opinion.
It’s a 2D platformer where you play as Ronald McDonald and search for pieces of treasure map. It was developed by Treasure, a developer known for its action platformers/shoot ‘em up games. Despite its obvious product placement, it’s a pretty fun platformer. If you want this quirky game for your collection you’ll need to pay $42-$66 for a loose copy and $115-$150 for a complete copy.

#8: High Seas Havoc – $45
I have a sad history with High Sea Havoc: I no longer own a copy, but not because I sold it. This game was actually stolen from me by a friend of mine at the time (I know, some friend).
Unfortunately, I don’t have fond memories of High Seas Havoc. I wasn’t able to figure out how to actually play the game so I never made it far. It looked great though. The colors were vibrant and the sprites were really well made. In any case, if I want to add this back into my collection, I’ll need to spend $45 for a loose cartridge and anywhere between $85 – $129. This game is getting harder to find too, so I’ll have to act quickly.
#7: Mazin Saga Mutant Fighter – $44
Hey! You got your fighting game in my 2D beat ‘em up!
I honestly purchased this game based on the cover art when I was a kid. It combined two of my favorite video game genres at the time: 2D beat ‘em ups and fighting games. I was a huge fan of Streets of Rage and Street Fighter, so this seemed like a slam dunk.
The gameplay is…alright, but it’s still really neat how they combined the two genres together. If you’re looking to add this to your collection you’ll need to spend $44 for a loose cartridge and $108 – $250 for a complete copy.
#6: Chiki Chiki Boys – $45
Here’s another random title I picked up due to the cover art. It’s wacky but I really liked the art style. The sprites in this game are amazing as well. They’re very bright and colorful.
Chiki Chiki Boys is a side-scrolling platformer that incorporates different gameplay mechanics like shoot ‘em ups. It’s a fun little game that deserves more praise.
If you’re interested in adding this game to your collection then you will need to spend $45-$65 for a loose copy and $120 for a complete copy. Be warned though, at the time of writing this, I was unable to locate a complete copy on eBay. The $120 came from Pricecharting so I’m not sure if it is completely accurate.
#5: Michael Jackson Moonwalker – $55
Love him or hate him, the King of Pop’s debut video game makes for a great side scrolling beat ‘em up. The 16-bit version of MJ’s songs also sounds amazing on the Genesis’s sound processor. The developers took a lot of care to make the 16-bit rendition sound as accurate as they possibly could.
The gameplay is good, but gets repetitive after the first few levels. MJ’s special ability to make everyone one screen dance is where this game shines. Unfortunately, you cannot spam it as it hurts him.
Moonwalker has always been on the expensive side, but lately it has reached $55-$62 for a cartridge and $140-$160 for a complete copy.
#4: Ghostbusters – $57
Now this game truly holds a special spot in my heart. Ghostbusters was the first Sega Genesis game that I ever got. I even got it before I got the Sega Genesis console itself (on X-mas Eve and the Genesis on X-mas). It’s a fantastic game and probably the best Ghostbusters game released at that time. It features most of the movie cast and has a lot of different weapons and gadgets to choose from.
This one is a little hard to price. Loose copies are plentiful on eBay and you’re looking at somewhere between $57-$65 on the low side. Complete copies are not currently available on eBay (at least not from the USA). There are other copies in Canada, Jamaica, and Italy though. I typically only count prices from US sellers so I need to default to the Pricecharting price for a complete copy which is $113.
#3: Gunstar Heroes – $67
Speaking of games that have always been on the expensive side, Gunstar Heroes continues to climb the charts. This is Treasure’s first game and it was widely successful and loved by all that played it.
It’s a side-scrolling shoot ‘em up with colorful graphics and awesome weapons. It’s a must play and I highly recommend it. In order to put this game in your collection, you’ll need to spend $67 – $130 for a loose copy and $142 – $200 for a complete copy.
#2: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Hyperstone Heist – $80
I’m pretty much going to copy what I said in my Top 10 SNES Prices article:
While the game isn’t exactly the same as Turtles in Time, it’s still a fantastic beat ‘em up. I actually didn’t have this game growing up. I purchased it within the past 7 years from a local game shop.
Hyperstone Heist is a beloved classic that fans of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle arcade games seek out. The price on the market is currently $80 for a loose copy and $182-$186 for a complete copy.
#1: Splatterhouse 3 – $90
The Splatterhouse series is a series well known for its horror theme and being violent and gory.
Splatterhouse was an arcade classic while Splatterhouse 2 and 3 were released exclusively for the Genesis/Mega Drive. Fun fact: Splatterhouse 3 was one of the first games to receive an rating by Sega’s Videogame Rating Council.
Splatterhouse 3 is another game that I didn’t have growing up but purchased in the past 7 years. I got an almost complete copy for ~$50 back then. The game is now going for $90 – $170 for a loose copy and $190 – $214 for a complete copy.
