The RPG of Life

Your origins are humble.

You are most likely born into a quiet and peaceful area, typically with a father/mother figure, though not necessarily a father or mother. In this area, you’re safe and protected, but inexperienced.

The land is familiar, its challenges readily overcome. Time goes by, and along with it, milestones that earn your first few levels. Your stats increase. You grow more capable, but have still yet to leave the starting area.

The first trip into the main world is overwhelming, but only because you’ve just started the game.

A few steps into the wild, you encounter your first monsters. Unequipped and at a low level, the challenge is daunting, but you succeed in defeating them. You take a few more steps, and again face monsters. The realization dawns that these conflicts will only continue throughout your adventure, and you must be ready to face adversaries each step of the way.

As you venture deeper into the world, the monsters grow stronger, each more challenging than the last. But you grow, too. With every battle, be it won or lost, you gain experience. Soon, your humble beginnings seem distant. Nostalgia for those simpler times begins to creep in, especially as your adventure grows more perilous.

Growing in level, you may find yourself called to a quest. Some characters will specialize in a certain class, honing skills that appeal to them as they grow. The more experience earned, the more strength, wisdom, and GP you amass. Your skills, clothes, weapons, and reputation will change as you do, many times over the course of the journey.

After so many battles, your character becomes advanced. The beasts engaged at this level are now truly dangerous. Facing them requires every point of experience you can muster. Looking back, you realize how easy those first few monsters really were. When you encounter those same monsters now, you defeat them in a single hit.

With little doubt, you’ll face a boss monster. Likely many. These times seem darkest, with opponents offering a challenge beyond anything you’ve faced before. It’s here that your skills will be most needed.

You may lose all HP and return to a save point many times before you’re victorious. But you must still keep playing. It takes perseverance to defeat these titans, but when you finally get past them, your level grows by leaps and bounds.

You are not alone in your quest. Companions will accompany you throughout, fighting monsters right alongside you. Some party members remain with you for the entire game, right to the end. Others will come and go, off on their own missions. Those that remain for the hardest battles are the ones you’ll remember most. It’s very likely your character will fall in love with one of them.

At the game’s conclusion, your character will have grown far past their small-town beginnings. You may find yourself clad in golden armor, or you may be scarred and worn, but stronger because of it. In either case, you’ll have seen a large world, grander and more magical than you ever could’ve pictured at the start. Your adventure will forever be part of you, equal parts triumph and bittersweet reflection.

With scope broadened, you realize that as epic as this journey was, it was only one of many in this game.

The most important thing to remember: There is no Game Over.
