Here are 3 of our favorite winter-themed N64 game levels.

The winter months are great for chilling around the house and enjoying some quality gaming time, and what better way to celebrate the coldest time of the year than by playing some classic snow levels?

Back in the 90s (and even today), it was commonplace to see game levels based around climate and season. Many platformers and adventure games had their fair share of lava levels, water levels, desert levels, and the list goes on and on. The Nintendo 64 had some of the finest winter levels we can recall, so we compiled this list of three classic N64 snow levels for you to check out.

If you have the opportunity over the next few months, fire up any of these nostalgic N64 titles and have yourself a jolly time rolling around in the virtual snow.

We’ve all been there, right?

Super Mario 64 – Cool, Cool Mountain

Super Mario 64 has plenty of imaginative worlds, but there are a few that have stuck in our heads for years and years. Cool, Cool Mountain had some incredibly memorable objectives, including a race down an ice-slide against a giant penguin, retrieving a snowman’s missing head, and a dastardly hunt for red coins. Oh, and you can also chuck a baby penguin off of a cliff.

That’s what most people remember about Cool, Cool Mountain, and why not? If you put an adorable baby penguin in front of a bottomless void of oblivion, there’s a pretty good chance that thing is taking a nosedive. Morbid, sure. Memorable? Absolutely.

Banjo-Kazooie – Freezeezy Peak

Similarly to Super Mario 64, Banjo-Kazooie is jam-packed with vivid and colorful worlds with personable characters.

In addition to being one of the best snow levels on N64, Freezeezy Peak is one of the best levels in all of Banjo-Kazooie. Featuring a massive Christmas tree with sentient lights, a towering snowman, and a sledding polar bear, Freezeezy Peak is full of fun holiday activities. You can even transform into a walrus and take a frigid midday swim.

This was the best we could hope for back then.

Goldeneye 007 – Surface 1

When I think of snow and the Nintendo 64, Surface 1 from Goldeneye 007 always comes to mind. Regardless of what agent-level you’re playing on, the mission revolves around shutting down a big satellite dish and stealing a few items. That, and traversing barren hills of snow that are dotted with enemies in winter gear.

There’s so much snow in fact, that it’s sometimes hard to see anything else. While Surface 1 might not be as festive or jolly as any of the other levels on this list, it’s still loads of fun and has a unique tone unlike any other level in the game.
